2020: a new year AND a new decade. As we journey into this new phase of our lives, let’s approach it with mindfulness – the state of being in the present moment without judgment. Incorporating mindfulness into our lives is beneficial; it reduces stress, enhances an appreciation for present moment experiences and increases self-awareness. Other mindfulness benefits include:
Boosted energy levels
Improved self-esteem
Increased patience
Improved focus & concentration
Increased compassion & empathy
Reduced anxiety
Enhanced sleep quality
An essential way to initiate a mindful lifestyle is by starting off small – doing one mindful act at a time without putting too much pressure on yourself (i.e. mindful eating, mindful listening, mindful walking, mindful sewing, mindful reading, mindful cooking, mindful shopping, etc.). Also, be intentional with each mindful effort that you plan on focusing on by setting a daily, weekly or monthly mindful intention. By being intentional with one’s mindful exercise, you’re more likely to maintain your focus.
Once you’ve included mindfulness into your life, enhance this regimen by practicing mindful meditation: allot a designated time, find a quiet space and begin by solely focusing on your breathing. With each breath that you take, be mindful of your inhale and exhale. As you breathe, monitor the movement of your body and deepen your connection to yourself. To foster enhanced body awareness, lie flat on your bed or yoga mat and bring your awareness to any tense areas throughout your body by mentally scanning your body – beginning with your head and peacefully and gradually scanning each area of your body – ending at your feet. While scanning your body, if you notice any tightness or pain, bring your attention to that particular area by breathing into it. As you exhale, imagine stress and tension being released from your body.
After completing this scan, lie comfortably, while peacefully breathing. Before getting up, place your hands on your heart and connect to each heartbeat. Tune into the beating of your heart and envision love flowing throughout your body. Then set an intention of self-love by silently repeating this affirmation to yourself: I love you.
Once you’ve completed this, gently rise and move throughout the day – mindfully that is.
